CIBM

Located in Granada’s Health Sciences Technology Park, the University of Granada’s Biomedical Research Centre (CIBM) was established to unite researchers, research programmes, postgraduate education, funding resources, and equipment, all to advance knowledge, innovation, and development in biomedicine with a commitment to scientific excellence.

At CIBM, research groups drive their work through externally funded projects that bridge fundamental and applied research, fostering collaborations between basic science and clinical practice to ensure that discoveries make their way into real-world clinical and technological solutions.

CIBM hosts research groups from the University of Granada, many of which are part of its four Institutes: the Institute of Biopathology and Regenerative Medicine, the Institute of Biotechnology, the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology, the Institute of Neurosciences.

Additionally, CIBM is home to research groups outside these institutes, such as Pharmacology of Natural Products and also Environmental Medicine.

CIBM also hosts the Biobank of the Andalusian Public Healthcare System, and is supported by specialised services from the University of Granada’s Scientific Instrumentation Centre, specially providing exceptional facilities for animal experimentation, including dedicated murine and zebrafish models. This collaboration strengthens research efforts across internal and external groups.

Recent advances in technology and biomedical research are reshaping the focus from the traditional concept of disease to a more forward-thinking and inspiring emphasis on health. CIBM is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation, reinforcing the University of Granada’s dedication to biomedicine and rising to the challenge of improving quality of life. With this vision, CIBM aims to establish Granada as an international leader in healthcare education and research.

The Centre’s goals are twofold: to bring together researchers with shared interests to inspire excellence in knowledge creation, and to provide the infrastructure and resources that foster an environment for outstanding scientific achievement.

CIBM is home to more than 300 researchers, including professors and research staff recruited through a range of talent programmes. Here, more than 130 biomedicine research lines are pursued from diverse perspectives across a wide array of disciplines. CIBM’s professors contribute to 23 master’s programmes and six doctoral programmes, bringing expertise from 22 different fields across six faculties, which gives the Centre a distinctively multidisciplinary edge.

The Centre is equipped with unique, state-of-the-art resources acquired through competitive grants, as well as specialised facilities and services rarely found at other centres nationwide. Many CIBM researchers hold prestigious positions in international rankings, recognised as Highly Cited Researchers and for their influential work and social impact as Altmetric. Over the last decade, CIBM’s lead researchers have published more than 2,000 JCR articles, earning over 50,000 citations and collectively achieving an h-index of 99. The Centre’s research is highly international and multidisciplinary, with significant contributions in fields such as Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacology, Food Technology, and Genetics. Rounding out the top ten research areas are Endocrinology and Metabolism, Cell Biology, and other branches related to Technology, Pathology, and Physiology. Each year, the University of Granada ranks prominently in Food Technology in the Shanghai Rankings, a field of intensive focus at the Centre.

CIBM plays a vital social role, with biomedical research initiatives dedicated to promoting health and tackling disease. Here, a multidisciplinary team of specialists comes together to forge synergistic research pathways toward these goals. Improving health not only benefits individuals directly but also helps reduce healthcare costs and the economic impact of work-related illness. CIBM researchers investigate conditions such as cancer, pain, ageing, vascular diseases, rare diseases, and other disorders, resulting in patents, new drugs in clinical trials, and spin-off ventures. CIBM is also deeply committed to training future health professionals, as seen in its active supervision of doctoral theses, undergraduate dissertations, master’s projects and courses, and internships. Additionally, CIBM prioritises professional training and community engagement, regularly opening its laboratory doors to the public to foster greater social integration and participation.

CIBM collaborates extensively with businesses and research centres, participating actively in both national and international research networks and projects. Working closely with the University’s Vice-Rectorships for Internationalisation and Research, CIBM facilitates exchanges for staff and students, as well as welcomes visiting scholars to foster collaboration between professionals.

As an official partner of the Parque de las Ciencias and a regular participant in outreach events like European Researchers’ Night, CIBM is a proud member of the Granada City Council’s Science Committee. This committee drives initiatives that uphold Granada’s designation as a City of Science and Innovation, recognised by Spain’s Ministry of Science. CIBM actively supports gender equality in research, with a special focus on inspiring women and girls to pursue science, nurturing a passion for discovery and leadership in research. These efforts reach a wide audience through local and national media, social networks, and organisations such as city councils, the provincial government, and the University of Granada.

Located within the Health Sciences Technology Park, CIBM is strategically positioned to interact with public and private entities dedicated to health-related R&D&I. This collaborative environment fosters knowledge creation, education, the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies, and the generation of wealth and employment, all driven by well-established connections between key stakeholders in the Health Sciences Technology Park and Granada Salud. The public plays an integral role in these efforts, becoming the primary beneficiaries of CIBM’s commitment to returning public investment in research through improved health and well-being. This forward-looking environment strengthens UGR’s leadership in cutting-edge research, the productive sector, and clinical applications.

So, CIBM stands out not only as one of UGR’s leading centres in scientific output but also for its strong social impact, upholding gender equality, inclusive education, and sustainability at every level.
